Hello fellow writers and artists!
The Saint Louis Projects is embarking on a brand new project befitting of its name. Along with the help of the multi-talented Nicky Rainey, I will be editing and collecting a book of prose, poetry, and artwork about St. Louis, by St. Louisans. This will likely be a one-time collection, unless it is super fruitful, then mayhaps we will do it again next year.
The idea of the collection is to celebrate St. Louis for all its assets and aspects, but not blindly or in bias. While this would not be a good place for your "Fuck St. Louis" rant, nor would it be ideal for trite odes. We are looking for the complex and the gritty, that which captures the ironic trash-ful beauty of this landscape. There are no length or format requirements, only that it be reproducable in a smallish 2D format.
We hope to debut this collection with a reading at a St. Louis landmark (the Arch grounds perhaps?) sometime in September or October. Therefore deadline for submissions is August 15th. If your piece is selected you will recieve a free copy of the handmade book. Feel free to send in multiple submissions, in multiple media if you are multi-talented. Keep in mind that any artwork must be easily reproducable. Depending on sales and success of the project (i.e. if the book makes any money), a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Operation Brightside.

Join us August 27 @ Mad Art Gallery for the release of the summer double issue of Bad Shoe.
The event is a combined art show, poetry reading, and book release party that will feature Clancy's recent photography of Mexico and the writing in Bad Shoe's Summer Double Issue. The handmade magazine's third edition juxtaposes the written work of twenty local women with reproductions of Clancy's stunning photos of Buen Pastor.
Over a year ago, St. Louis ex-pat Katie Clancy packed up her life and moved to the labyrinthine city of Guanajuato, Mexico. There, immersed in the unfamiliar and far from fluent in Spanish, she met the 30 young girls of Buen Pastor, a convent that provides foster care and education for at-risk females. Both inspired and troubled by their stories, she undertook the development of an after-school arts education program to help the girls form and explore their nascent identities through writing and visual art.
Clancy has returned to St. Louis this month to raise money for the school, which is funded largely by private donation. In collaboration with Bad Shoe, a local women's literary and art magazine, she is hosting a benefit at Mad Art Gallery on Friday, August 27th from 7 pm to midnight.
The event will include readings, a raffle, the art show, music by DJ Ben House, Mexican street food, and a special musical guest for a suggested donation of $2-5. New and previous issues of Bad Shoe will be for sale. Proceeds benefit the eStudio 473 after-school program for the girls of Buen Pastor.
